"The Butterfly Affect" |
Yellowfin-31 | 7/11/08
OK, finally I am getting
a chance to update my reports. I know I have to get
better at it! Over the past month I have been introduced
to a type of fishing that is new to our area for offshore
fishing and I have
fallen in love with. It is the most effective way
of catching fish that I have ever seen.
The type of fishing
that I am talking about is jigging with the new Shimano
Butterfly jigs and also I have been using the new Briad
hammer jigs along with the Williamson jigs. I am telling
you what, I can not beleive the fish that I have caught
on these things. Here is a list of what I have caught
on the them in the past few weeks. Amberjack, Grouper
(Reds and Gags), American Red Snapper, Dolphin, King
Mackerel, Barracudas, Triggerfish, Spadefish, Sea Bass
and Sharks. It's crazy and that is why I love it! Now
don't get mislead because I have lost quiet a few jigs
to some of the toothy criters like Mackerels, Cudas and
Sharks and it took a while for me to figure out what
all it takes to go with this type if fishing.
When I first
started, I was using my regular bottom fishing tackle
and was just tying on a jig and was not getting the results
that I liked. So I did some more research on it and saw
where the rod and reel combination was just about more
important than the jig itself. What you need is a light
action rod that is able to let the jig work in the motion
that it is designed for and then you need a high speed
reel that can keep up with the slack line while you are
jigging. Later, I spoke with James from Osprey
Custom Fishing Rods and he made a few for me to try out
and let me tell you these rods can bend in half, no joke!
Then I put my Shimano Toriums on there that is geared
6.2 to 1 and loaded it down with 85lb braid with a
20ft peice of 90lb fluorocarbon leader. After I did
all of this my results went through the roof with hook
ups just about everytime we dropped it down. I have
put some photos down at the bottom of the page from
my half day and 3/4 day trips for you guys to check
out and check out the one where the rods are bent over
in half. I do beleive James has found is signature
rod! I have a few open dates left this month and some
in August, so give me a call or shoot me an email.
If you can't reach me on my phone just leave me a message,
I will get back with you soon as possible.

"Sailfish" |
Yellowfin-31 | 6/3/08
When we got to the dock around 5 a.m. my charter guys Jacob Zimmerman and Nick Wiegand told me that they woud love to catch a Billfish today of some sort, whether it was a Sail or a Blue. Well they had there shot at both today! We started the morning just inshore from where we have been fishing, cause the area looked very fishy. After setting lines we had a King Mackerel in the boat, which wasn't what we looking for but then had a nice Dolphin at the boat that made a last minute jump and the hook went to flying. From there I knew we were going to have a good day. We trolled on and saw lots of bait and heard a boat on the radio say they just lost a Blue Marlin so I knew we were in the right area. Then all of sudden as I was checking my baits and I look back at the teaser and there he was! I yelled at Jamie to pull the teaser in and I dropped the pitch bait to him. We had a Sail on and it was text book. He put on a great show just behind the boat and then all of sudden the left flat went off and another Sail appeared but I just couldn't get him to take the bait. But we did manage to land one of the two and also picked up a dolphin out of it. The day didn't stop there. After about an hour we were checking baits again and then the right rigger popped and I saw a huge splash and Jamie yelled "Blue Marlin Blue Marlin!" But the bad news was the fight ended before it even started. We dropped it back and he just didn't want no more part of it. Talk about a heart breaker. But one things for sure it was an awesome rush while it lasted. We did manage to boat a few dolphin, kings and caught a few cudas but the Billfish where without question the high light of the day. I'm ready to get back out there...fishing is to good to be on the golf course or laying on the beach so lets go fishing. Talk with you guys later!

"Dolphino' Dance" |
Yellowfin-31 | 5/26/08
During the past few trips, pretty much all we have been able to do is just pick at em here and there and it was about to just get on my nerves. But all that changed yesterday morning around 7:45am. I told my crew Hank Sr, Hank Jr, Levi Rutshow and Brian who are from Ohio to get there around 5 a.m. because we were going to have a good ride out and I wanted to get to the grounds as soon as possible. After getting lines in around 7:45 a.m. these guys just didn't know how to act for a good 4 hrs. This was all 4 of their first trip to the deep water and Jamie and I broke them right. We found a good weed line just inshore from all the other boats and picked just about every fish off of it we could and then around noon time the bite slowed down for about an hour, but before that it was 1 on...2 on...3 on...and all the fish were good quality size fish too and even had a teenage wahoo to boot with it. When the bite slowed down I was able to talk with a Captain just 3 miles from me and they had been hooked up with a Blue Marlin for about 2 hrs and then it broke off on them right at the boat and another boat caught and released one in the same area earlier that morning. So what did I do? I headed that way when the bite slowed for us, but unfortunately we didn't raise one. Then, a good friend of mine Capt. Roger Gales radioed me and told me they were in em thick up to the east of me about 3 miles so I started to head his way and about a mile from him we were in them again, 2 on at a time. We stopped fishing around 3:30 because we had no choice...we were out of bait.
It was just an absolute beautiful day on the water too. I have waiting for a while to have a day like yesterday and all I can say is that the dolphinos are here boys. I am a firm beleiver that these fish are just running about a month behind and it is only going to get better, so get down here and go fishing. The billfish are starting to show now because I heard that there was quite a few caught towards the North and South of me also besides the 2 that were caught where we were at. So the fishing is looking up for us finally. Also I would like to thank them guys because they did and outstanding job and worked hard for the fish. That's what it is all about. Talk with you later!

"Slingers and Gaffers" |
Yellowfin-31 | 5/24/08
First off I am sorry for being so absent lately...we are still fishing and have been real busy at and have had quite a few different things going on also. Last week the wind blew pretty hard and I was just lucky enough to have a good friend of mine Wes Hamilton call me up and ask me if I would be interested in flying with him down to Palm Beach, Fl to pick up a boat and bring it back up the waterway to Ocean Isle Beach...and of course I was on board for that! Man we had a awesome time and got to see the high life of the rich and famous as we pasted zillion dollar homes in Fl and got to see the awesome scenery as we come through GA and SC. It took us almost 4 days to make the adventure but everything went as ordered and not one thing went wrong with the boat.
As for the fishing it is starting to pick up more and the Dolphin bite is getting better and better each and everyday. Thursday I had an awesome group of guys, Mike O' Donald and crew who live right here in Myrtle Beach came ready and I'm glad they did. When we got to the grounds and were setting lines out we had one on. Right after we landed that one, Mike hooked into a good size bull and fought it and fought it until finally we got him close so I could stick him. It was the biggest fish of the day and it was only 10am. We managed to boat 2 more gaffers and 1 slinger and then somebody just flipped the swich. We kept trolling and covered a bunch of ground but just couldn't find anything going on. I talked with a few other guys out there and it had just died off for them too. Man I hate when that happens. But the on a positive note they still had plenty of fresh mahi for dinner and we had a slick ride home.
The next day I had some guys from Greenville, SC that drove all night just to come fish and then were heading back right after we finished so I was really wanting to put this guys on em. But it was just like the day before. I boated 4 dolphin by 10am and then found a pretty nice weed line and started working it but there was about 20 other boats working it and was putting a lot of presure on the fish and thats when mother nature herself decide to join the party also and we she did she showed up in full force. Lets just say it was real sporty on the way in and leave it at that!
I'll be back on the water Monday morning bright and early and hope things pick up...I am pretty sure they will!

"Weekend Round-Up" |
Yellowfin-31 | 4/21/08
This past weekend I was able to run to the Stream
on Friday and Saturday, but one things for sure it
wasn't the greatest conditions I have ever fished.
On Friday I was joined by husband and wife Josh and
Jennifer Jarvis from Fayetteville, NC who had put
there trip off from Monday due to rough condition
and decided to go on Friday. We made it to the fishing
the grounds around 8:00am and got all our lines in
and right off the bat we had our first strike on
the flat line. Jennifer battle the fish for about
10 minutes and the hook pulled right as the fish
was at the boat. About 5 minutes later she had her
second chance at a Wahoo and this one was put in
the box. The Wahoo weighed 41.30 and was good enough
to get her a citation on her fish. The fishing continued
to be good till around 11:00 as we had around 8 bites
and her husband Josh boated a king mackerel. The
conditions started to get worse around 1:00pm so
we decided to cut the trip alittle short and head
in. I had a great time fishing with them.
On friday
night when I got home I check the weather for my
trip on Saturday and the reef cast showed that it
was going to be really nice. I was taking some good
friends of mine Jonny Cecil and his two boys Trey
and Drake and Doug Younts and his son Jacob, who
are all great fisherman. And let me tell you, the
weather man missed this forcast by a long shot. The
ride out was just great, and I told my mate Jamie
that I think this is going to be a really good day.
But as soon as we got to break the wind picked up
and the condition got worse and worse as the day
went on. We got our lines out and had a good strike
on the planner but the hook just didn't sink. For
about 3 hrs we battled the seas and then thats when
we decided to call it a day. They were all good sports
about it and understood.
As for fishing in a whole,
the weather has just not give us much to work with
lately. You get 2 pretty good days during the week
but just as soon as you think it is going to calm
down it kicks back up again. It's driving me crazy!
The Wahoo fishing as been great as pretty much all
the boats that have gone out that is what they have
been catching and the dolphin are starting to show
up with good size gaffers beening caught. I'm going
to be hard at it later on this week so stand by for
further reports. I still have some open dates later
in the month and some during May also give me a call
or shoot me an email.

"Finally
Fishing" |
Yellowfin-31 | 4/13/08
After about 2 weeks of a stiff
blow quiet a few boats were able to make it offshore
last Thrusday and Friday. Most of the boats were fishing
in Jeff Martini's Wahoo tournament and there was a bunch
of nice Wahoo that were caught. Jeff put on a great tournament
and had a great turn-out...it was a good way to start
the season off. On friday I had a great group of guys
from Lexington that come fishing with me quiet a bit.
We left the dock around 6am and headed on offshore and
had lines in the water around 8am. It took a little longer
than usual cause we had to make a detour around a storm...radar
is worth every penny! Fishing was pretty slow to start
so we decide to troll on offshore and around noon we
had 3 knock downs, but know fish. I beleive what it
was was a school of small blackfins that just weren't
big enough to fit the hook in there mouth cause when
we checked our baits you could tell that all of them
had been hit and ruined. Thats just my guess. So around
2pm we got into a bunch of scattered grass which caused
us to head back inshore to about 250ft deep and I'm
glad it did cause as soon as I marked some bait on
the machine the planner rod tripped and started melting
like I have never seen before. After about a long battle
of 3 minutes top, Jamie stuck the pissed off Wahoo
and put him in the box. The fish estimated to be around
50lb-55lb. We set lines back out as quick as possible
cause I wanted to go back over that bait but when we
did we were unsucesseful to bring another fish out
of it. But our crowd was happy with the big fish they
got and so was I.
I
have a pretty busy week this week. I am going to be
in the Stream on Thrusday, Friday, Saturday and running
a make up charter on Sunday like I always do (so if
your interested give me a call...3 spots are open)
and right now the weather is looking great all weekend.
I just hope that it doesn't change on me. So stand-by
for a good and long report within the next few days
and hopefully some good pictures. Hopefully them Tuna
will show cause I have the bug for em'. Just to let
everyone know I still have a few days left open towards
the end of this month so give me a call or email me.
Look forward towards the weekend...Stand-By!

"Upcoming Weekend" | Yellowfin-31
| 3/31/08
I just wanted to make a quick
post to say that I am heading to the Stream on Friday
and Saturday and that I am going to be having a make
up charter on Sunday and have a opening for 2 or
3 more. Shoot me an e-mail or give me a call if you
are interested. The weather has been pretty crappy
this week with the wind blowing 20kts or more but
the weekend looks great. I do know that last week
the Wahoo bite was really good along with some good
size Blackfin. Hopefully the Yellowfin will show
this weekend...I know I am ready for them. Stay tuned
for a report from the weekend long with some pictures.

"Back from Florida and Ready
for fishing!" | Yellowfin-31
| 2/26/08
Finally after a long 2 weeks
of being in South Florida working the Boat Show in
Miami, James and I have finally made it back to the
Carolinas, and desite it being about 30 degrees cooler
here, it sure is nice to be back home. I don't know
how much longer I could take of it paying $10-$15
for a Cuban Sandwich and $8 for a fricking draft
beer, I mean come on! But all in all the show was
a great success for James who took a bunch of orders
on Rods along with meeting new people in the fishing
industry that absolutely loved his rods. Now everybody
can realize why I all of my rods are made by him,
he does awesome work.
Now that we are back, I've been
continously working on getting everything ready for
the up coming fishing season and getting geared up
for Yellowfin and Dolphin that will be in our waters
before we know it. The Yellowfin will start to show
there faces around mid- March as the waters start to
warm and will be hot all the way through the month
of mid-June. As for the Dolphin they are only a few
weeks behind them and usually the first ones that show
up are big gaffers. My prediction, come the week of
Easter, the bite is going to be on! We have not had
that cold of a winter this year which could mean that
these fish might decide to start showing up even earlier
than normal. As for the Wahoo, they have been here
all winter long and will continue to be here all the
way through June also, which gives you a great chance
to catch a Carolina Salm through the months of March
and mid-June.
Also something new that I have decide
to do this year to start things off is to give away
a free Crowd Pleaser Sportfishing t-shirt along with
a Crowd Pleaser Sportfishing decal for the first 50
trips that I book. The season is just around the corner
and will be here before you know it, so give me a call
or either just shoot me an email. Spring only comes
once a year!

"Show
starts Tomorrow" | Yellowfin-31
| 2/13/08
After a good but long drive to South
Florida, James and I finally made it down around
1:30am Tuesday morning. After a few hours of sleep
we headed over to Sailfish Marina and some of the
local tackle shops that morning in West Palm Beach
and spent a good hour and half talking with some
guys from Black Bart Lures on high speed trolling
for Wahoo.
We spent all day setting up our booth
today and getting things lined up for tomorrow. I
will post more reports with in the next few days
and keep you all informed on how things are going.
If you are in the area come on by and see us. Stand
By!

"Heading
to Florida" | Yellowfin-31
| 1/30/08
Well first things first, I'm
sorry that I have not updated my report in almost
2 months. The truth is I have not been fishing that
much. I have been spending most of my time working
quiet a few boat shows with James Carnes who owns
Osprey Custom Fishing Rods and we have been working
together on designing a few new rods for Gulf Stream
fishing such as a new Planner Rod for Wahoo and a
custom Kite Rod that I plan on putting to use in
Florida for Sailfish in a couple of weeks and for
Yellowfin Tuna come this Spring time. We both are
heading to the Miami International Boat Show to work
it and then heading to Palm Beach, Fl to team up
with good friend of mine Capt. Chris Burrows for
a few days and target some Sailfish. I'm ready for
some warmer weather. So if you are planning on being
in Miami the week of Feb. 14-18 stop by and say hey.
As
for the fishing goes, to be honest the Bluefin Tuna
fishing as been really slow. Most of the fish that
have been caught down this way have been too small.
Most of the Giants have been staying north up in
Morehead City area and around the Cape Lookout Shoals.
Although Capt. Patrick Bryant and myself were lucky
enough to land one fish this year that measured 85''
and weighed about 350lbs and cored out at 290lbs.
As for the Gulf Stream fishing, the Wahoo bite as
been pretty good in the 200-500ft. range around the
Scarpe area. I was able to make it out there last
week and had 5 strikes and landed 2 nice Wahoo in
the 30-40lb range. The Wahoo are here and will continue
to be here up till the start of summer. We have an
excellent Wahoo fisherie during this months and it
is as good as anywhere, so don't miss out on it.
I am starting to book trips for the 2008 Gulf Stream
season for Tuna, Dolphin and Wahoo, which starts
in March and is hot all the way through June. So
shoot me an e-mail or give me a call, I'm getting
fired up!

"Young Guns" | Yellowfin-31
| 12/1/07
Today I was
joined by a good friend of mine Jason Hedrick and
his 3 boys. The plan was to head offshore and let
the boys get into some the King Mackerel actions
that was going on...and we found it. As soon as we
had got all the lines out, we were hooked up. It
was like this for the the rest of the morning and
into the afternoon. After about the 5th or 6th fish
the boys were learning to bait the hooks and learning
to gaff the fish, they were in command! They were
quick learners and not only did they have a blast,
but so did Jason and I. After the last fish was put
in the box we headed back in to a slick calm ocean
and was back at the dock by 1:30. The weather is
looking pretty good for the rest of the week, so
stand by for futher reports.

"Bite
is On" | Yellowfin-31
| 11/18/07
Well, all I can say is that the late fall
fishing can't get any better than it has been
over the last 2 weeks. The Gulf Stream has just
been lit up with big wahoo and blackfin tuna
with reports of a few sailfish and yellowfin
tuna being caught. But I have been spending most
of my time chasing the hot king mackerel and
grouper bite that has been going on. I ran trips
last Monday and Tuesday and could not keep the
baits in the water either day, while having double
and triple hook ups all day long. There doesn't
come to many times when I get a chance to fight
fish, but the past few days everybody on the
boat has been getting action. Also there has
been rumors starting to fly with Bluefin tuna
sightings, so give it another week or two and
they will be here. The weather looks great all
week long, so come on down and get in on all
the action.
